Question about balance shafts

I am guessing that since the balance shaft counter balances the engine then it will have to be timed properly. If anyone knows how to do this then i would greatly appreciate it if you could describe this process.
thanks

Jon,
First off you MUST have the correct Toyota repair manual to
setup the balance shaft assembly, not to mention the correct
measuring tools. If you don't feel comfortable doing this....take
the engine block and balancer to a Toyota dealer and have them
do it for you. Once you see the repair manual, you'll see what I'm talking about.

The adjusting shims are sold in something like 20
different sizes and this procedure is still difficult even for an experienced Toyota technician.

I can't tell you how many phone call we receive from competent
shops that still have a hard time with proper set-up.

Call me if you need me to fax a few pages to you.

Is this repair manual the one from the Toyota dealership or is there a specific one?

The Toyota manual is the only book worth having...any others
are a waste of money IMO.

If I decide to just leave the balance shaft off, will this be ok? From what I've seen it is ok to go without it but i dont know what to do about the oil line going to it. Should it be plugged or just left alone. Thanks for all the information.

From what I understand the balance shaft helps dampen engine vibrations.

So I would say its okay to leave it off if you want.

Oil line?

I didn't see any oil lines from the one I removed on my buddies 5S-FE. Unless your talking about the oil pickup that bolts onto the corner of the block.

Well i decide to just leave the balance shaft off. I couldnt decide whether to plug the hole or leave it open so I bought a plug and put a small hole in it to restrict the flow. I definatley notice more vibration but its not really bad. At the worst point I can hear the hangtag on my reaview mirror vibrate. I dont know if it added anymore power because im still breaking in the engine.

balance shafts are there for NVH, they won't reduce engine life in any way.

how much does it weigh?

care to check back once everything's broken in? That should make a big difference in the lower gears and rev-matching if it's std.
