Engine Mount Problem?

I noticed that there have been a few postings about replacing engine mounts. Aside from the engine hopping around under acceleration, what are the symptoms of engine mount problems that would require replacement? I have been experiencing strange creaking noises when I brake and accelerate. The shop I go to has the opinion that it might be a mount problem. Does that make any sense?

It could also be a bushing problem with the suspension... Engine mounts would basically give you a clunking sound when you accelerate from a stop.

Actually, I get clunking sounds, too. I had attributed that to strut mount problems, but I just replaced the front right mount (where the sounds are coming from) and that did not solve it. Maybe it's an engine mount issue.

Thanks for the reply.

No problem. You replaced the shock top mount? how much did that cost you?

I doubt the creaking noises are the engine mounts... I would be more suspect of balljoints, wheel bearings, and suspension components. When engine mounts go, then you notice more wheel hop under heavy launching, and on-off throttle motion creates a "chug-a-lug" sort of back and forth movement in the engine bay.

The part was about $50 (US). I don't know know exactly how much the installation cost, because it was included with some other work that I had done. It didn't take long, so I would estimate it at less than hour based on a shop's hourly rate.

Yeah, that's how I would have expected the car to sound with bad mounts. What I have is actually two sounds. One is a light creaking or popping sound that can be heard when starting up from a stop or with on-off throttle motion at low speeds. The other is a louder clunking sound that is noticeable when starting up from a stop or when coming to a stop at low speeds. These sounds occur in forward gears and reverse. Over the weekend, I took a hard drive on twisty roads, and I heard the clunking sounds on hard cornering. The clunking definitely sounds like it's coming from the area of the strut, but rather than being caused by up and down movements, it seems to come from front-back and side to side forces. The source of the creaking sound is harder to determine, but it's also from the front right area of the car. I've had the struts checked, and they seem fine. As I mentioned before, the repacement of the strut mount didn't seem to solve anything. I'm going crazy trying to determine what this is.
