Headlights Work SOMETIMES...

Whenever I turn on my headlights, the light housings pop up, but the bulbs only SOMETIMES turn on. I have to keep turning on/off the switch in order for it to work, or just resort to having it on high beam all the time.

Changing the bulbs won't help, because the lights do work sometimes, but sometimes don't.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this really annoying problem?!

Oh, one more thing... my gauge cluster lights don't work at all...

THANKS!

what car do you have??? was it the AE92???
anyways....i had this problem when i had my Eurolights....the bulb for the lowbeam was loose, and it only worked sometimes....i got it exchanged with another eurolight...now they work fine....but the old one, the coil was dangling around and made contact when ever it felt like it....but the prob was faulty light bulb.....might be yours too....

and for your cluster lights, jus change it by taking out the dash apart....it wont take you more than an hour.....

yeah, what dragoon was saying about the loose light filament's happened to me before too.....

but I actually have the same problem these days too, but it's not the bulbs, cuz I recently took a look, and found out that I fried half my harness on driver's side lowbeams......gonna go to a junkyard to see if I can scrounge a new one up sometime....:p

The harness suggestion is probably your best bet.

My head lights were retarted for some time now. (Xenon, you can verify this!!!!!)

They would go off and on at will, stay on when they felt like it, and all sorts of stupidness.

I spent 3 weeks replacing any wire that looked damaged or replacing any connector/contact that looked corroded.

With older cars, the wires are completely exposed to everything, and plus we put in bulbs that were never meant for the car in the first place!!! lol... But if your harness is cool, then check contacts and connectors. Your switch appears fine as the lights pop up all the time. Check that any wires are not grounding and shorting themselves.

Well... whenever the lights pop up... I just use high beams. So if the high beams ALWAYS work... do you think that it means I need new bulbs?!

I dunno how to check the wires... I guess I'll go learn!

THANKS

To check the harness and wiring, youve gotta remove the headlight housing to start. Then you can see wether your harness or wires are burned out.

You said you've tried new bulbs so obviously thats not the issue here.

The thing is though... that the same bulbs are used for low and high beam, and the high beams still work!

maybe the problem is the headlight switch, the part on the dashboard, but behind the switch part that you use to turn the lights on and off. The is common on the Aw11 though, but the AE86 is simmilar..........
