Oil pump or balenceshaft problem?

I recently rebuilt my engine because of a bad rod bearing. While i was putting it back together i came to the balance shaft and i found nothing in the chilton's book that i was using about it so i looked at the marks on it and pretty much took a guess on how it goes back on ( later i learn that i actually did have it timed right ). At the time i didnt know that the backlash had to be adjusted. So i dropped the engine back in and started it up and heard a kind of clanking noise. i put about 100 miles on it before i realized it was the balanceshaft. i decided that i didnt know how to put it on right and i couldnt afford to have it done so i took it off. I did notice some of the teeth on the crank chipped. Also when i was rebuilding the engine i installed a new oil pump and didnt prime it. I put about 400 miles on the engine when i heard a noise that sounded like crankwalk so i checked the bearings and they were worn. I pulled the engine again and found that all the bearings were bad. My theory is that running the oil pump dry caused it to chip off some metal which got pumped to the the bearings and caused them to go bad. Or it had something to do with the balanceshaft. Anyone have any other ideas or advice on what to do?

the balance shaft will have oiling, how did you deal with blocking those passages?

for that i just put a plug in it and drilled a small hole in the plug so its just restricted and not blocked. I dont know if that was the right thing to do or not

yopu should have blocked it off completely, once the balance shaft is gone there is no need for oil there.

How did you put in the plug? did you use magnecoil to make a threaded hole?

have you checked that the plugs are still there?

figured out yet what the source of your problems are?

Re: Oil pump or balenceshaft problem?

HI all,

Newbie on this site. My lady friend 93 Camry Le with a 4 cly automatic and it is making this Clacking noise on any engine RPM. It gets louder as you increase the RPM. Noise is coming from the middle of the bottom end.Engine runs smooth and there is power on all gears. No hesitation and stumbles. She already took the car to mechanic and the mechanic already replace all the timing components. (Belts- timing belt and serpentine, tensioner and water pump, pulley) They also check the valve lash/gap on the valve train and did not find anything wrong.

After spending $700.00 on this, the car is still making the noise.
She called me up and ask what else could it be, can it be that the noise is coming from the balance shafts.

Any opinions, help?
