the drum brakes on my gen4 have gon all rusty, yuck.
Im thinking about taking them off, knocking the rust off and painting them black.
whats the best way to do this?, the removal of rust specifically.
You'd have to take them off first of all, but it shouldn't be had at all. A few hits and bangs and you should be able to pull it off by shifting it from left to right!
I would recommend taking it somewhere to get it sandblasted, cause it will cost you about $20-$30 and it will look brand spanking new. Then use heat resistant paint (Used for manifolts and brake calipers).
That's what i did when I painted my drums...

Depends. Some engine enamels are better without primer.. and it has to be hi-temp primer to put there. I painted mine 2 years ago with engine enamel (blue) and its still nicely on.
I got it done at my Mechanics place.. You shouldn't primer because the paint is heat resistant and the primer is not.. So you'll cancel the heat resistance on the paint that way!
I just painted them straight... They're still black now, I might give them a coat of black before the summer...
