Rev matching. Before you go down to 1st gear, step on the gas once to rev the motor up, then stick into 1st right after. This way you won't get the motor-brake effect that you usually get when you downshift.
Make sure you're not going too fast though.. first gear isn't really supposed to be downshifted, because if you're going too fast.. you could blow your engine. 10-20km/h plus a revmatch should be ok.

i dont downshift much anyways... its more coming to a rolling stop at a stop or yeild and it wont go in until im like almost completely stopped.
even with synced trannys, you still can help relieve some stress on the synchros by double-clutching. You don't need to for the higher gears because the ratios are close enough, 1st is usually much wider than other gears, so if you wnat to shift into it while moving, it helps to give the synchros a hand by double-clutching.

You only need to put the car in 1st if you're stopped, or you're traveling at speeds less than 20Km/h!
i think you might of missed my previous post ...read my second one
If the revs are right and the speed is right and you're not trying to accelerate or decelerate while switching, it should just snick right in. If not, you probably shouldn't be trying to force it into 1st anyway. In stop and go on the 401 sometimes you just have to go there. Double clutching works for me.
Be kind to your syncros.

like Xenon said you shouldn't even need to down shift into 1st
but dont forget our older cars do have a factor of wear and tear on them no matter how well you maintain .... where as new cars, well they new so them can handle some abusive 1st gear downshifting

I tried downshifting during a run around the track and I swear my tranny climbed out of the hood and gave me a dirty look.
Problem I have with second to first is there are times, such as coasting to a stop light which suddenly turns green, where second bogs you down but you're too fast for first. In that situation I end up having to rev to like 4 grand before it'll let me into first. I guess really it's just poor gearing for that sort of situation.
