high idle rpm when cold

Need help!

This car runs perfect in all other respects except as noted below.
Milage is 96,000 miles.

My 1995 XLE six cylinder Camry idles at 1900rpm at cold start. The idle rpms. decrease to 1100rpm after 3 minutes at ambient temperature of 70F and eventually drops to 750rpm in about 5 to 6 minutes.

Toyota shop checked this condition. no codes showed up.

I believe the cold start idle should be about 1500rpm. max and and drop to about 1200 in about one minute.

Then it's ok to shift from park to reverse.

Replaced the thermostat with a new one and tested it by heating in a pan of water to varify that it did not open before 185F. OK.

Checked the old one and it was OK too.

Checked the engine coolant temperature sensor for K ohms resistance and at 72F it read 2.5K ohms and at 153F it read 0.5K ohms. These values are in the specified range in book.

The IAC valve ohm values are as specified by the book
Cleaned the IAC with carb cleaner while runing the engine while connecting and disconnecting the IAC connecter.

Is it possible that the computer is misreading the ohm values from the ECT. If so is it possible to reset the computer.

I can't find book specification for cold idle rpm.

Should I replace the ECT on the chance that its not working properly? Thats a $80 shot.

My head hurts.

Help.
Gene

One word: NORMAL.

What did the shop say when you asked them to check it out?

What you are seeing sounds fairly normal. On most 'cold starts' here in California (temp still above say 40F) the car will go up to somewhere between 1500 and 2000 rpm, then settles down pretty quickly to 1500... then drop down to about 1k, then down to idle speed. It takes a bit longer when its below freezing, but the pattern is the same.

The best way to get the idle down is to drive the car. Don't sit there idling for more than a minute or so, unless its really cold. Why make your engine run for any longer than it has to? Just drive away gently and your engine will warm up more quickly.

-Charlie

PS. My car has made it 266k miles with the 'just drive away after a few seconds' method, and it runs perfect, burns no oil, etc...

Hehe... my garage barely gets below 55F ever. Maybe that's why my car never idles much above 1500, even when cold.
