High idle rpm when cold

OK, The cold idle speed on my 1991 maxima is 1500 and drops quickly to 1300 then to 1200 in a minute from starting.

This is normal and Ok then to shift from park to reverse at 1200prm.

My 1993 maxima worked the same way.

I am concerned that I will damage my transmission when shifting from park to reverse at 1900rpm.

What is highest rpm that is considered safe to shift from park to reverse without damage to the transmission?

I appreciate the interest and help.

Thank you:

Gene

What is the highest rpm

Re: High idle rpm when cold

Where did you get the 1200 rpm number for your old Maximas? As long as your foot isn't on the gas, its safe to shift the car into gear. Your tranny is under way more stress everytime it shifts while you are getting on the freeway. Its nothing you should worry about.

Think about how many automatic Camrys there are out there (hundreds of thousands) and how many people have tranny problems. I bet that 95% of them don't think about letting the car warm up at all before driving away. And I don't think that any of them have been damaged from shifting into gear when the engine is idling high.
