22RE Engine Swap

Hi. I have a 88 Toyota 4x4 w/ a 22RE that needs a new engine. A friend of mine has 22R that I was thinking of getting off him and switching over the carb to fuel injection. Is there any problems with doing this kind of change over? I was told that you could change a 22RE to a 22R, but not a 22R to a 22RE(something about the head being different). Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There are two kinds of 22re's. Older vs. newer. I forgot which year exactly they switched, but I know the early 90's 22re's are different from the early 80's 22re's. Sorry if that doesn't help much. Ummm...the only bad thing I can see about switching from RE to R is that boosting would be more difficult. If you do go for it, I'd suggest looking into a 20r head...if it fits, it'll help.

I think in 85 or 86 they changed the head. You could swap the whole engine easily enough, though you might have smog issues going backwards in years, but you can't swap early heads onto late blocks and vice-versa I'm told.
