Auto Trans 81 Pickup.

I just bought an 81 yota pickup and I'm wondering which model automatic trans it has, do they make shift kits for it ? thanks in advance.

Read an old article from 1980 where an engineer and indy car race builder installed a "840" trans into a toyota 4x4 before the factory did, said it was a bullet proof trans so I'm hoping that's what my truck has.

Look at the vin tag under the hood. What does it say on the "axle/trans" line?
ie. something like "A340/F292"
That's the first step to figuring it out.

Thanks DCM, The few manuals I've looked at list it as an A43, it's a 3spd, I hope it's bulletproof as I would like to invest in it's longevity with an oil cooler and shift kit.
