ball joints, tie rods, cv boot, etc ~ help

how often do u have to change these things
my dads 87' nissan stanza has been recently changed b/c we went to a family friend to change the front pads.. and he noticed they were in need of replacement..
so we did it up..

but for my 94 corolla.. ??
what kind of signs should i look out for?

b/c my car does makes a clicking noise from the suspension once in a while when turning my wheel and going slow.. like out of a parking lot.
