Rad change...

As some of you know, I'm swaping the engine this weekend in the 86. (finaly) I also have to replace the rad. Now we have a parts car, an 88-90 doge shadow and I think I'm going to switch to an electric fan system with this thiner rad, you know get rid of the belt driven fan. I was thinking toggle switch just for the time being... but does anyone know how to add a temp unit into the system so it will come on by itself? Or is this not a real possibility?

Thanx,

it's 2 bucks from crappy tire, a toggle switch.

come on

anything electric has a switch somewhere i think it can't always be on or always be off.

and even if it's "always" on..something has to trigger it "on" right?

well a fan (per say) either has current passing through it, or it dosen't

that's the switches job, but it is an option, in the summer you could leave it on all the time, woulndn't really matter, but in the winter it has to be shut off for starts and when just the fwd motion of the car is enough

but when you're stopped in the winter, it would have to be turned on

or if you just leave it running all the time in winter, you might either always run with a cold engine, or might wear out your thermostat prematurely if the temp of the coolant hovers around the thermostat's temp

that heat switch would be ideal if you want to do the electric fan conversion

the other car has to have this probe, in fact its probably built in the rad

this is what i want to do as well, but with a Fan temp. control thermostat thingy.....so the fan turns on and off by itself according to the temperature

i don't really want a manual toggle switch, because in the future i'm going to have mad switches everywhere, plus if something goes faulty, and the temp. is bouncing up and down, i know i wouldn't want to flick the switch on and off every 10 secs

besides, almost all the cars have electric fans, and i definately don't see a toggle switch for the driver to flick

project trueno
(my account is messed up! @#^%*#$)

The Dodge has a thermostatic switch that threads into the rad. This little brass fitting is a sensor that closes a circuit and turns a fan on. Try to use that. I also have one from my Celica kicking around if you wanna use that. Have you thought about using a rad from a different car? Maybe somthing that will provide more cooling and already have a bung for the switch?

Im going to use the rad from the dodge, as well as the fan, as long as its not to thick. I'm pretty sure it will fit. Might be a bit of a fab job to mount it... but we will see. So I might get lucky and be able to use the whole assembly.

i didnt read ur post carefully and i am new to the toyota scene but if your 86 had an efan u should just hook up the wires from your old efan but if it doesnt u will need to go to your local parts store and ask for an electric thermostat, tell them your putting an efan on a car that didnt have one, they should know what u want if they know ne thing, you will also need a heavy duty relay, the efan will not be able to pull enough amps from the thermo so you need the relay, also if your lookin for a good fan get one from a mid 90's tauras from your local junk yard. they pull 3400 cfm!!! i think the efans from the jaguar type x's are good to
