Okay...So I've decided to begin doing my own basic car maintainance and I'm going to change the oil on my Gen3 Camry. I've got everything worked out except for how to remove the oil filter on the 5sfe engine (inline 4). the strap type filter wrenches won't fit in the space where the oil filter is, so I've seen two other types of oil filter wrenches in my research online...one is like a cup that fits only specfic filter sizes, and the other one seems to be known as a "spider"-type adjustable filter wrench. Is this the wrench that I'm supposed to be using, or is there a specific type wrench that I have to get? Since I'm in Toronto, I'll be checking out CrappyTire tomorrow for a filter wrench, but if they don't have one that I can use, can you guys also let me know where I may be able to purchase the correct wrench? Thanks guys

I use the cup type and I got at my local Toyota dealership.
They come in plastic (graphite?) and metal. Get the metal one.
I had a hard time using the strap wrench due to the location of the exhaust, so I got one of those cup ones. Really easy, they've got a socket for a ratchet so you can just kind of plug it in and go. I *have* used the strap wrench before so it is possible, but you have to place it just so on the filter so that when you pull to the side to tighten it, you don't run into the exhaust and pinch your fingers.
err why dont u use ur hands...i use my hands...it costs nothing

"boro boro boro
here we have a duct tape la la la
here we have an electrical tape du du du
here we have a coke can da da da
and then we have a downpipe!! boro boro boro"
And it's done! Oil change went fine, except that I had to roll the car up onto some folded over rubber mats so that the oil drain pan could be slid under the car...who knew that 1.25" lowering would actually cause clearance problems?? Next up, installing a strut tower brace later this afternoon...I'm on a roll baby!

As for using my hands, I'm afraid that I'm not that ghetto (would boro be the correct term, now that I know what it means?) mainly because I'm not man enuf to put my hand right next to a flaming hot exhaust manifold and trying to twist off the filter which is ALSO hot like a mofo from the oil and exhaust manifold heat....
I know this may sound weird, but I didn't bother using an oil filter wrench. I just put on some old gloves so my hands wouldn't get dirty and "unscrewed" my oil filter (on '91 Camry). Make sure that when you unscrew it that you don't just take it out, but instead lower it some. A way to picture what I mean is imagine you have a cup (in this case, the filter) and you have the cup held down in front of the cooler to get some water (in this case, the cylinder head is the cooler). Hope this helps.

For everything else, there's paper bags!
I let it cool down for about half an hour and just use my hand, its not that hot and with enough strength applied, the grip of your hand does just well.
You know, I'm surprised none of you have suggested just driving a screwdriver through it and turning it that way. That would probably be the MOST boro way.

I was just going to say that. If the filer is on so tight that I cant turn it with my hands, a screwdriver works well. You only need to hand tighten it after install.
