Yes and no

The VVTI can be run in open loop but you need a predictable vacume source. The 2JZ-GE has a massive vacume tank that you could use to actuate the VVT

The megasquirt can run VVT-i thorough its boost control feature in case you are considering an EMS.

Cool

vvt-i can be controlled by anything that can modulate a signal. n2o controller, wastegate controller, fuel injector controller... Seems like a small (not bad) waste of money to me less someone wants to run big compression ratio pistons, or alot of boost.

For less than $100 more you can have a full blown piggyback that'll control ignition & A/F ontop of that.

You'll need the revised intake manifolds to go along with a head swap. And you'll want the corrisponding ECU to go with it, even if you don't run the thing. Some ugly things have happened in the past mixing MZ head & manifold components with one another.

Here is how vvt-i works in general. Thought that would help you.

Quick Question, How are you going to control vvt-i, if your car did not come with it? Do you have to change out the ECU also?

Toys, are you saying even an safc can do the work?

Cool

No, it requires something that can generate, or modify a form of PW signal, Even if it's based on a single frequency. An SAFC simply changes the voltage (resistance) of a signal.
An injector/solenoid/motor controller modulates in pulses. (Pulse Width Modulation = pwm)
