Bad Rod Bearing

On a 2000 Corolla with 200,000Km the car had a serious knocking, dropped the pan and found that the number 1 or 4? ( on the drivers side) rod bearing is gone, the rest look fine. Would you guys suggest changing all the bearings or just the worn one? Also would the engine have to be pulled or can we do it in the car.

Does anyone know a good source for bearings.

Is this a common problem with this engine or did we just get a bad engine. I always felt toyota engines would last much longer than this, the car is never raced or driven hard, mostly highway miles.

Depending on the price maybe a new engine would be a better choice than repairing any opinions on this?

Thanks,

Darrell

Its unusual for the rod bearings to fail at 200k on any Toyota, especially one that hasn't been abused. Did you keep up to date on your oil changes? Anyway, it would def be better to do all 4 at once, like Boro said, if the pan is dropped and everything is out of the way then there's no reason not to.

the same thing happened to me on my camry with 170,000 miles on it. i didnt catch the problem soon enough and had to replace the crankshaft also. if the crank journal is still smooth then you can change the rod bearings without dropping the crank. just make sure you get everything meticuously clean

Actually Chris the 1zzfe has been out since 98 when it came out in the Corollas. Toyota's are notorius for every now and then an engine had a rod bearing that goes bad. When I rebuilt my engine on my 88 camry with 165K on it the number 1 cylinder(#1 is always the one closet to the timing belt/chain) it was toast luckily I didn't have to take the block and crank out I just cleaned up the surface plastigauged it and it was fine and put in new bearings. I also replaced my rings since I was putting in a new head which if I were you I would just pull the block and do a full rebuild on the engine. Once you seal one thing up it blows the other end up because the oil has to go somewhere so with you doing the bottom end your top end is going to go. So at least pull the head and repalce all the seals, gaskets and rings along with the rod bearings and doing that correctly you should be set for a lot more miles on her.

Yeah thanks I know how long the 1-ZZ has been out... I guess I consider 5 years not that long, it seems like just yesterday it was the end of 2000 and I had just bought my brand new Corolla. Time flys, now the original 50 miles is up to 44,000...
