I was driving today, and I noticed that when I come to a stop, there is a grinding noise coming from my brakes during the last few feet before coming to a complete stop. I never heard it before, and I drive with my radio very low most of the time, so I'm positive that I would have heard it before. I had my car certified 6 months ago when I bought it and they said that I have 90% of my pads still there, so I don't think it's because I'm out of pad material...especially since I never heard the pad wear warning squeal thing. I'm a pretty aggressive driver and I do a lot of hard stopping, so I'm going to check out my brake pads tomorrow for wear. Any ideas what it could be other than worn pads, because if the groaning/grinding noise is because of worn pads, I'm probablly messing up the rotors already....
Hmm..well, I checked out by brake pads and rotors, and visually, they look fine. I still have plenty of pad left, the rotors don't look scarred (at least not on the outside facinf surface... couldn't take a look at the side behind the dist cover), and they feel smooth. I'm gonna take it out later for a spin and see if the noise is still there. Anyone else have an idea what the noise could be? It is a low pitched groaning/grinding noise (almost like the brakes are complaining) that only happens under hard braking and only for the final 1 or 2 seconds before coming to a stop. There is no strange noise while driving, no noise under light braking, and no noise while turning or anything. Could dirt have gotten under tha pads and made that noise?
Took my mom's Gen5 to work today because I didn't want to drive mine just in case the brakes were being messed up on the inner face of the rotor. Did some pretty hard braking and the same grinding noise happened on her car as mine.
Would someone please take they Gen3 Camry out (or meet up with me so that I can test their car) and take it up to maybe 40 or 50kph then do some hard braking to see if they have the same noise? Don't slam on the brakes at speed...apply the brakes with authority and steadily increase the pressure on the brake pedal until it you come to a full stop, but do not allow ABS to engage.
I've come to the conclusion that either it is either 1) a design flaw with Toyota brakes (although not probable because I'm sure the brakes on a Gen5 and a Gen3 are different) or 2) a noise that all brakes make when pushed to the limit.
If the second scenario is true, do you guys hear that noise when you go to the track and you're braking into a corner? Would anyone care to venture what would make that noise go away? Is it healthy to push your brakes like that all the time because if it's not, then I'm obviously way too aggressive a driver and will have to change my driving style accordingly (or at least my braking techniques)
i have a gen3 and have the exact same problem as you, i've had this problem ever since i got my car which was about a year ago, it happens about 80% of the time, and then there's a day or two in the week where it doesn't happen
last few feet of hard braking does make a noise, and i tried moving it around in the garage cause it's easier to hear the noise and it's some sort of weird squealing, i think one day i'm just gonna replace the rotors and shoes all together when i get the money.

good luck,

Do you get the noise in the last few feet of braking if you come to a stop gently? I can't recreate the noise in the garage because I can't brake hard enuf to make the noise happen. If I come to a stop like a normal person (like how my parents would WANT me to drive), the noise isn't there. Either way...when you change your rotors and pads, let me know if the noise goes away.
well it's weird, it usually always happens under hard braking, but under light braking sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't, i checked the pads and it was all good, rotors seemed find etc. so i may change the whole rotor pad assembly someday
Ever hears the old joke: "Doc it hurts when I do this! What do I do?" Doc: "Don't do that"
Try not driving like a maniac and beating on your brakes at every stop. I think it sounds pretty normal for a car to make some brake noise under threshold breaking... Just take it easy. If your brakes work well, and inspection reveals no problems, you are fine.
BTW my girlfriend's Gen3 does the same thing...I'm starting to think it is the ABS, does a dash light come on when ABS engages? I drive her car a lot but it only makes the noise when I get caught by a late yellow light... I'm not worried about it but it is curious.

Hahah...well, if the noise is normal for the situation, then I won't thrash my brakes like that anymore, but if the noise could be indicative of a problem, then I'd want it fixed, but the more I hear and learn, I'm starting to think that it's a normal thing.
The ABS light doesn't come on, and even when my ABS does activate in bad weather, the light still doesn't come on...isn't it only supposed to flash when there's a problem with the ABS?
dude, that noise is not normal, and it happens under normal braking just a few feet before you come to a complete stop, i think we maybe missing some auto-squeal shims or something
