I'm sorry I lost something in how you described your problem. What exactly are you having trouble with?

Noise? Power at the bottom end?

Sounds like he lost some bottom end. Shouldn't be though, a muffler alone wouldn't make such a large difference. An exhaust leak on the other hand...

from what i've read about exhaust systems, and you saying that you dont want to lose backpressure, a 2.5" system may be too big. perhaps 2 1/4"? i have a 2" catback though i would have prefered a touch bigger.

this lancer, was it 1.8 or 1.6? if it was a late model 1.8, then our cars would be beaten.

Don't go too big with the exhaust unless you are turbo'd

2" is plenty.

The reason turbo's can use a larger exhause is because there is built in backpressure within the turbo iteslf, also the larger exhaust does help the spoolup time.

The reason you shouldn't go too big with a normally aspirated exhaust is because of the problems you are experiencing now. Just because a mod is good for the track doesn't mean it is good for your car As you have noticed sometimes the gains on the top end are not always worth the performance lost on the bottom end.

Good luck.

get 2.25 or 2.5 back and then make a smaller down pipe, if you still dont have the bottom end make the down pipe even smaller, u want all your exhaust restriction in the downpipe and header, this will make the most difference, once you get back past that your not going to help the bottom end as much and you will hurt the top end more

hmmmm whats a "stick piston" if a piston was stuck or seized you wouldn't be able to drive your car.

If your mechanic tells you you got a stuck piston and you're still able to drive your car, I'd change my mechanic as soon as possible because quite frankly, if he doesnt know a thing like that...what else doesnt he know

maybe he means a "sick" piston, like it's not feeling well..
Maybe he has low compression on one cylinder...

Umm... it cant do that, if it would it would be one time and thats it, frozen piston. Pistons just dont stick every once in a while :P

Maybe its time you changed your mechanic... hehe who knows what else he doesnt know... Abotu your loss of power, it could be your exhaust pipe, it might be that you lost some low end torque and it takes time to hit the powerband hence the "And on take off i sound like a WRX then it kicks in and away she flyies" and when you hit the powerband it zooms forward. Seems pretty much normal to me.
