4th Generation Engine Code Problem Dealership Can't Fix

Howdy. 1997 Camry XLE with 3.0L, 93K miles. P1705 code (direct clutch speed sensor) w/check engine light on. Bought car a couple of weeks ago and understand transmission was replaced with used one (43K) for same code. Discovered mechanic took out check engine bulb and declared it repaired. I replaced bulb, found code and took to Toyota dealer. Replaced direct clutch speed sensor (twice), jumpered wiring harness to ECU and replaced ECU...light and code still on. Toyota gave up and said maybe, but probably not, a remanufactured transmission would correct. Pulling the bulb is not an option as this is my daughter's car and I need it to work properly. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

The link below provides some info on this code. Suggest doing a further Google search on this code, the number of hits is large. The one other trouble issue listed was the wiring.

How does the trans shift, smooth, etc? Would not put another trans in at this time.

Who disconnected the light, the dealer that sold you the car? Removing the check engine light might be considered fraud and illegal where you live.

The problem could be either a worn out clutch assembly in the transmission (read high gear but not OD) or the lock up clutch in the torque converter.

I think your on the right track, if trans was replaced but not torque converter the same code would be there. Get more history on the repair at 43k. I had the joy of diagnosing a 4runner once that had a similiar code. Trans had been rebuilt same torque converter. I replaced torque converter and fixed the code. There is always the possibility of a harness problem.
