Removing/Reducing power steering

Has anyone here removed their power steering or reduced its output so that there is less steering boost?

I don't know if there are any performance gains, but I don't drive with my radio on much, so all I hear is the hiss of the power steering when I'm at a stop or going slowly and it's REALLY ANNOYING!

Are are there other Toyota pwr steering pumps that have less boost that I could swap in? Would electric pumps be quieter?

the new sir and s2000 has elec pumps...they're quiet, u cant hear anything.

u can simply remove it...take off the belt, take off the pump and voila...u got weight savings and another 1whp

it's not that hard to steer without PS on a rwd car....i did it on my car and it was a bitch tho(ff) so....try it and see how u like it i guess

I honestly don't think it's a smart idea to remove power steering on a 3200lb car.

Heck yes it is! I wouldnt remove the powersteering.. if the car wasnt powersteered in the first place.. but heck, thats just dumb because of a slight hiss... theres alot more hisses in a car than that

All depends on the car. I had an old crx without ps, stock, and it was fine. But then i had an escort with it but it always leaked out so I left it alone, but what a bitch it was to steer that thing.

Whoa...is that how heavy the V6 Gen3s are?? But I guess 2900lbs isn't that much lighter.

And I wasn't aiming to remove the power steering. I was more wondering if there was any way to reduce the boost. I went driving in my cousin's Volvo and it made me miss the heavier steering of my Mom's old 940 Turbo. And performance gains had NOTHING to do with my intentions.

So have I, it was a bitch to drive in traffic and talk about parking... lets just say you need to have some muscles to drive around town without powersteering on a powersteered car.

I just read a letter about this in Hot Rod magazine and they told the guy (this was for an old domestic of course) to swap in thicker plates from a different model pump to give it more off-center effort. Maybe you could find a pump from a different model that would fit but has more effort...?
