How often to change the fuel filter?

Mine has 83K miles on it.

I've seen a vehicle totally fail to start with the fuel filter having maybe 150K on it.

To be safe i would change it every 10k to 20k depending on how many miles the motor has on it.

according to toyota- never.

but personally, I didn't change mine until about 250K km....it was the original filter from factory in 94

and I only changed it because I was boosting and wanted to make sure I had a new filter that wasn't clogged

if you use good clean gas for the car's life there isn't that much to worry about when it comes to the fuel filter

If you are referring to Gen 5, the only filter present is the one in the gas tank.

My dad was stationed in Naples Italy from 1976 to 1980... we kept a spare fuel filter in each car and the tools needed to change one, at all times! Their fuel was frequently dirty... I think thats why on cars like old fiats, etc, the 'clear' plastic fuel filter was usually in plain sight and easy to access!

Here stateside... I've never changed one!

I was glad [but not surprised] when I first heard this. My local Nissan dealer told me the same thing yesterday. I worked at a dealer for 18 years and used to occasionally cut the metal fuel injection type fuel filters open on high mileage cars. They were all relatively clean inside, FAR from ever clogging. I stopped changing the fuel filters on my personal cars about 5 years ago. It seemed like a waste of time and money.

Has anyone ever noticed the large external spin on filters on the sides of today's gasoline pumps? They are filtering your fuel as you are pumping it.

when i worked at toyota i would recommend changing the filters every 60k. even though they say never better safe than sorry. also helps with fuel mileage. ive cut open some of the "lifetime fuel filters" on different year cars and they all looked the same. like crap.
