broken piston ring...

I beleive that my tercel has broken a piston ring, i dont know what cause it. And because of this the car is now running on three cylinders instead of four. What can i do? i know i really only have two choices, fixing the engine or swapping it out for another. So now what i need is a reliable place to get a motor from. Anyone know anyplace?

How do you know the ring is broken? Have you done a leak down or something?

Maybe do a leakdown test if you haven't already just to help confirm the ring problem. If I'm gonna pull an engine, I want to be SURE that's the problem. If it is, start calling wreckers. What year is your car? There's a wrecker here in CA that specializes in Toyota's. They have all sorts of engines. Or you could rebuild, but that means you will be out of a car for a while. You also know that it will be nice and fresh when you're done though.

A broken piston ring will pressurise the sump. This in turn will force oil up the motor internally, rather than down by gravity to the sump. One way of making sure is to pull the dipstick, do you hear air escaping as you release it? Another indication is oil in release points, like air cleaners. If you do find oil where it shouldn't be, try running with the dipstick out as a test, the dipstick tube will act as a pressure relief to some extent
