I own an 88 Celica GTS, it's my winter beater and runs really well in the cold and snow. My main ride is a race-tuned 05 Tacoma X-Runner.

My Celica is stock and I have no plans to mod it but for its age the under-side is in decent shape. I thought about rally/cross but it is front wheel drive and I hate fwd.

I think high compression forged pistons/rods and (mild) cams available for this engine since you want a mid to high power band. checkout Toda, Hks and all forge piston makers Wseco, JE, Arias, etc.
