Hi guys, i'm new here and need your help...

Hi guys. I'm stuck in a position right now so here goes. Any help is most appreciated. I have a 99 Camry CE (Stock daily driver) and ran into this problem.


The other day while coming back from Sanfransisco, there was a slight amount of smoke coming out of the steering column. Then it I could smell wires burning. After I got home, i discovered that my headlights wouldn't turn off. Also both my low and high beams were on simultaneously causing heat and therefore almost melting the headlight plugs. The headlight housing was also pretty hot. Anyways, I couldn't turn OFF the lights using the switch, and neither the high/low beam contoller was working. I still have control over the parking lights, but no control over the actual headlights.

I had to take the plugs out of the headlights in order to turn them off...

Could someone tell me what might be wrong? I'm thinking there might be a short inside the steering column where the light switch/ controls are....

If that's the case where can I find directions in taking the column off??

I think your assesment sounds correct.
If smoke was comming out of your steering column then yes, you probably got a short in there that fused the headlight relay or whatever the fuck. I would say get your self a manual because it will show you how to get off the steering column and also it will have a wiring diagram. Good luck!
