what size spacers will i need

i am almost clueless on this factor when getting short stroke shocks. i am getting either some used TRD short strokes or tokico HTS's. how do i calculate the size of spacer i will need?

my second question is how are the spacers installed? i don't quite understand how the spacer works besides pushing the shock up somehow. ive done many suspension installs and lowered countless cars, but never had to do modifications like this before, if someone could explain briefly (or not ) how it is installed let me know, thank you.
