87 Celica, if its a GTS then he's got the 3SGE, if its the GT/ST then he's got a 3SFE.

If it is the GTS then your buddy is luck because the 2nd gen 3SGE from Japan is 160hp and it slaps right into the stock mounts and bolts up to the stock tranny and even uses the same harness, I'd grab the ECU though. Its like a Honda swap and the bonus is that nobody cares for that engine so they can be found cheap. A good intake and exhaust, paired with the 4th gen GTS's tall-assed gearing and you can go SiR hunting. One thing I'm not too sure of is which motors got an LSD from the factory and which didn't, look up the ST18X Celica GTR, I'm pretty sure thats the one that came with LSD (and 4 wheel steering as well as SSII front suspension, yummy.)

If he has the GT/ST then its a little more difficult as the harness isn't the same as the 'G' motors. On the G motor dizzy there are two wires coming off that run into the ecu where the 'F' motors only have one. Because of the extra signal the ECU can't monitor and run the motor as the proper ECU would.

The 3SGTE is also a good swap for that chassis as it uses the same mounts but would require a different harness and ecu again.

I don't think this platform gets enough respect, its lightweight and can swallow a nice street motor like the 3SGE or a beast like the 3SGTE, if only it were better looking.

zenon... way too many questions to be posting... \
all the info you need can be found with a search. try searching 3sgte swap.
and it sounds like you are a complete noob, so i would not advise doing such an engine swap yourself. there is a place in texas that has experience with toyota motor swaps especially 3sgte stuff... i cant find their name right now cause the mr2oc.com is down...

slip, try that site, and try www.toyotacelicaonline.com and www.celica.net ... not sure what you will find with these though...
