how to check Wheel's offset?

I am puzzled...How do you check the offset of the stock wheel without physically taken it down and measure it? and how do you determine which aftermarket wheel will fit onto your car without any problem?

oh.. I mean is the offset of the stock wheel written somewhere?
if the stock wheel's offset is 40, then what is the range that can be considered to be a good fit? (ie. 35-40. 38-40)

Yeah its written somewhere along the rim, not sure on which side it is. but on steel wheels its usually stamped near the bolt surface, on alloys sometimes its between the spokes.

recommended offset will change based on the width of wheel you want to use, so there is no 'recommend' range based on your offset unless you plan on sticking to a wheel with the same width.

I recently asked http://www.discounttiredirect.com/ what the offset was for 03 camry, this was their response

The offset of the OEM wheel is a +45mm. If you install aftermarket
wheels, the following offsets can be used:

7.0'' width wheel : +35mm to +45mm
7.5'' width wheel: +35mm to +45mm
8.0" width wheel: +38mm to +40mm

I also asked tirerack, they said 46mm.

to chk offset you gotta have 2 rulers. both flat and straight. first place the first ruler accross the back of the wheel face. so you gotta have a ruler or a flat surface that will be atleast the diameter of the wheel. now place the 2nd ruler perpendicular to the flat surface and measure the back plate with the edge of the flat surface.find that number in CM. ok now that you got that number its called the backspacing. now you find the width of the wheel. if its a 6" for example, the the dead centre is 3" wich is 7.5cm. ok. how with that ruler if you measured lets say 12.5cm which is 125mm then you do 125mm - 75mm that will give you 50mm. so for this example your offset is 50mm

got it?

if u keep the same width, you can go up to 10 either way and you'll be fine.
