Purpose of a catch-can.

I know many of you have heard of an oil catch can, and some of you may have one on your 4AGE equiped AE86... ever wonder exactly why youve got it there, or did you just do it cause it was cool? j/k

The problem with the 4ag is not the pistons forcing up extra oil, but the oil pump surging. During hard turns, the oil pump has a tendency to surge and dump a lot of excess oil into the valve covers. This combined with a hard left turn makes all the oil slide to the right of the valve covers and swamps the PCV exit on the valve covers. Some of that oil flies into the pcv hose and then into the intake manifold. Sometimes the amount of oil is so great that the oil drips down when the valves are open and engine starts to billow smoke out the ass.

... hence the need for the "oil catch can" There are many different ways to create one of these cans, a pop bottle or some ABS pipe and some fittings, a bit of hose and tada... you have your catch can. I will be installing one of these in the next week or two (providing my plan to re-road my car go well this week), and will post pic's of the process.

Hello, i'm from Portugal, Europe, and I have recently bought a Corolla GT Coupé (so called AE86 - Panda Trueno).

The problem that you have mentioned is common to my own, and a few friends of mine around here.

I think that in Canada you havn't many "roundabouts" (correct me if i'm wrong). In Portugal we can find them almost everywhere on our roads and it's nice to practice some drifts.

Two 360º turns and we'll have oil from the exhaust. So much that we often get our spark plugs completly dirty.

The oil catch can that I can frequently see around the web, doesn't seem to resolve this problem, because this can will fill up very quickly.

I leave here two questions:

Can I cover the hose that connects the valve cover to the T-VIS? Is it the engine's only breathing point (to eliminate the inner oil pressure)?

Why aren't these oil catch cans positioned above the engine, so that the oil will return to the system (when the engine isn't running of course)? It won't work?

Best Regards
