22r 20r engine swap question

will a 1977 20r from a celica gt bolt up to a 1985 toy 4x4 that had a 22r in it? I want to run the 20r while I build my 22r......thanks

I've no idea, but I hear the 20R head on the 22R block makes for a nice power increase over the 22R head. 22R block has to be prior to 86 I think? At some point Toyota changed the 22R and I think it was in 86 or 87. Might want to look into it since you have both engines available.

77 20 r to 85 22r

DONT DO IT! Youll blow the head gasket enough times to buy yourself a new car.

20R's and 22r's don't blow head gaskets that much. To anwser your question though yes it will fit in there but why would you want to put a less powerful engine in there. Your best bet is to build a 20/22r hybrid motor which is the bottom end of a 22R and the top end of a 20R. The 20R has better flow in the ports and the combustion chambers are closer to the pistons giving you higher compression. You can also use the 22R rocker arms which are aluminum instead of the heavy cast 20R rockers. You will have to use a 20R intake manifold though because the ports are different on a 20R and a 22R. Also 85 was the first year for the new block. Which that block had a different deck heighth. So if you do a hybrid motor you have to use a block from 84 or older. Also if you have power steering in your truck then make sure you find a 20R head that has the holes for the power steering pump bracket. Not all of those heads came with holes for the bracket.

The 20R head being an improvement over the 22R head is a myth that blows lots of head gaskets in a 4x4 application. I have had such a setup, and a 22R was never designed to hold up to over 200psi per cylinder. Not to mention the valves and ports on a 20R head are considerably smaller, thus a restriction on upper rpm's.

I just need a engine, whether its a 20r or 22r does not matter I just need a engine so I can drive my truck while I build the 22r that I took out of it, I'm gonna built the 22r over time when I have the money, little by little piece by piece.... I just bought a 77 pick-up with an 80 something engine in it today, the body is crap but the engine runs smooth and strong.....thanks for all the info guys...Fondren

Well just get another 22R then because if you get a 20R you will have to put in the 2R0R intake manifold as well. It will be a lot easier to jsut put in a 22R.

20r 22r

i am in some what of a similar situation i have a great runnin little pickup with a 20r and a pretty tattered body, i'm gettin a mid eighty's little toyota pickup with a blown 22r and a nicer body, i would like to put my 20r in the newer pickup, their the same truck basically and i would like to know if that is easy enough, i don't care about power at all i was plannin on using the stock intake and stuff off of 20r and i'm not worried about wiring i mainly want to know if all the motor mounts are the same and clutches and exhaust manifold and what not. any info would be much appreciated

Should be fine Jim. I had an 81 Toyota with a 22r block/20r head/20r intake/22r exhaust. Pay attention and take pics of the water hose setup especially around the intake and under power steering area. 20r has water passages 22r doesn't and crossing the hoses up will make it run hotter than normal.
