Talking 22re engine swap

Hello tech heads.
I need your knowledge for a proposed project I have this weekend. I am a small business man and a backyard mechanic that has done a few Chevy 350 engine swaps pulled and replaced a few transmissions and you know the usual beginner light stuff like water pumps, brakes, and even a clutch once. So being short on cash and big on “go get it” this is what I’m thinking of getting into. I have a 1988 Toyota 4by4 with a 22re with 140,000 that is my main vehicle in which I do my business (window cleaning). I love my truck but she is barley hanging on. Oh, she still gets around town, but she knocks, rattles, and spits oil. I know I need at least a head gasket but probably a full rebuild and refresh is best at this point. Ok well last month I acquired a 92 Toyota truck with a 22re (130,000). The previous owner lived on a farm. The body is beat to hell and he said it had an electrical short and he smelled wires burning after a mouse or critter got into it chewing on things or at least that’s his story. The guy is filthy rich so I believe he could not care about a beat up old truck. So he just parked it. Motor supposedly the best thing about the truck , he said it was strong. The oil looks great, no oil in the engine bay, tail pipe clean so I bought it for a song. Now after I check compression which ill do today I want to swap motors and then send mine to be redone. That’s my great idea. So my Question is Will this be a straight swap? What difficulties may I run into? Are these the same motor? I hope I haven’t embarrassed myself with my lack of knowledge. I can turn a wrench though.

Thanks in advance for whatever helps you can give.

Small business man with little knowledge and big dreams

The '85-'95 22R/RE engines are the same, the pre-'85 are different. Search the pre-'95 truck forum for lots of info.
