is there an actuator that could automatically switch between normal exaust and side exhaust. Kinda like those swinging flaps that seperate groceries.

If so, does anyone have any ideas on were to get one.

I know of a muffler made for trucks that is tunable from the cab. It looks like an intake manifold from a 4 cylinder but inside is a flap that you can adjust so its either straight through or slightly closed. Don't know if it works very well or the name of it though.

Yeah, there is a product like you describe. JCWhitney has something like it. Basically a Y pipe with a flap that switches from one side to another. You run a cable from it to inside the car to switch back and forth.

Why would one do this? So you could have a quiet setup and a race setup simultaneously?

Electric cutouts...employed since the 50's. A fun little device usually installed before the first cat. There's a few Supra owners that use them for running as close to downpipe only as possible at the dragstrip, and quiet as an HKS mouse around town. Keeps a sleeper a sleeper, instead of letting a loud exhaust get you noticed. Restricts slightly from a true open pipe, but most wouldn't notice.
