4KC timming

I am having a problem with my 81 starlite. The timing wont stay set. I can set the timming to stock specks 8deg btc with vacume advance removed. Hook it all up take it for a drive( 5 mi ) hit it with the timming lite and now it is running rough and timming is at 5deg btc. The self adjusted timming is not allways retarded it is all over the board. Yes the bolt for the distributor is tight and the distributor has not moved. Yes I have replaced all of the vacume lines. I also am trying to pull the distributor out of the enging and it wont come out. Is there a clip or something besides the clamp under the distributor. I am wondering if the gear at the bottom of the distributor could be worn or loose and why is it hanging up?

Canada Timing changing

If the distributor won't come out, pull the ting apart right there; you may have broken/damaged weight springs. This will cause a sloppy timing. Back in the old day when we used distributors on race cars, the spring and weight modification was a must on Group N and GP1 cars.
