This is how I did it on my car. Due to the fact that Camry's are known to rust I had lots to repair on the rear quarter panels. I got all of the loose rust off and then used expanding foam in the rust spots, let it harden up and then used duraglass on the outside of the car, let it harden, and then just sanded it down. I'm not to great when it comes to using metals so that is why the expanding foam worked for me. As you can tell in my Camry pics it works fine. It probably isn't the best way to repair it but the panels no longer have rust on them or leak.

Depends how bad the rust really is. This is what I usually do. It's sort of time consuming, but it works great.

- grind of any surface rust or corrosion w/ an angle grinder
- if the rust ate through the metal, patch it with fiberglass
- fill in any imperfections with a putty
- 40 grit wheel on the area and slightly around it
- 80 grit wheel again over top of where you previosly sanded, a bit farther out this time
- backsand it by hand using 180 - 220 grit
- scuff sand it by hand using 220 - 300 grit
- feather edge until smooth with a DA sander w/ slightly finer grit than last
- clean surface from any dust or debris and wipe down with a wax/grease remover
- 1 coat metal etching primer on any bare metal showing
- 2-3 coats of primer to fill in smaller unnoticeable imperfections
- guidecoat it and block sand w/ 500 - 700 grit
- 1 coat primer sealer

Then your done, all you have to do now is paint it. Which I would recommend getting done professionally so the paint matches real good. But if you're in for a quick fix, you can skip a lot of the steps I mentioned above. It's only if you plan on making sure the rust doesn't come back for a LONG time.

Hope this helps.

If you sand the rust down it will always come back, the best way to get rid of rust completely is to cut the rusted area with a couple of inches around it and weld new metal on.

You can also buy used panels and replace them, but you can sand it down if you just wanted to be fixed temporarily...

It sort of depends on how bad the rust is. If we are talking about surface rust then it is a matter of cleaning it up and repainting. If we are talking about holes through the body then the best way is with a welder and new metal. If it is holes through into the trunk etc then it may be a safety issue as well. We had my son's Honda Accord repaired last spring. It had holes through into the trunk and we were advised that nothing short of welding in new metal was acceptable in terms of government safety inspections. If you get inspected or if you decide to sell the vehicle then it has to be done right or it will not pass the safety test.

90camrygal - your interior is mint, very clean. With a paint job I think it lots new...

I am thinking of fiber glassing the holes, not so sure how to do it, but I have been reading some books and watched Dream car garage and it seems simple enough

used expanding foam in the rust spots
The problems I've heard about when using foam is that it can hold moisture creating an even greater rust problem from the backside.
