Kooky idea for an oil temperature sensor...

What if we were to take the probe from a Oil temperature sending unit, and thread it into a braided line (like that of which 88 LE made for his connection to his turbo), and take temperature from there???

Here, I'll draw a picture in a minute.

that might work, but i can already see one flaw in the design. where the sensor is located won't be the ideal spot because the sensor won't be in the oil's direct line of flow. basicly the oil will get caught up back in that pocket and sit. not moving with the flow and circulating around the sensor to get the most accurate reading. i hope my babling makes some amount of sence to you, if not heres my design which might prove to explain what i'm getting at.

We're not talking about pressure though, we're talking about temperature...

However, if the pressure is constantly changing in that line, then the oil must be changing itself out a little bit.

It should work, but you could use a copper line or just a normal hydraulic line with the correct ends. would be cheaper than a braided hose, plus hydraulic hoses have internal braids inside the rubber.

Where else could you place an oil temperature sensor without having to drill the oil pan, and make a welded fitting???

you could make a threaded fitting...

or you could just put the wire across the oil pan gasket and put some silicone, that would seal it up pretty good

I'm not on to take that kind of risk (silicone and all)...

I'm looking to do something simple, and easy, with decent reliability.

It's ashame this car doesn't have a built in oil cooler.

Anyone know were I can find a sandwich plate for the 3SFE filter???

Thus still presents our dilemma...
Where do we take the in and out lines for the cooler from?
Someone posted in the past about having a sandwich adapter for the in and outs.

Anyone know where to find one? (I asked this above).

I'll also need to look at how exactly I would mount this oil cooler.

*Adds to list of winter projects*

Its a fitting that mounts between the block and the oil filter. They arent too difficult to find. Then you can mount the cooler infront of the radiator and/or condensor.

I know what the sandwich adapter is. I'm just wondering where to find one.

Can I find one made specifically for a 3S-FE, or will the adapter from a 5S-FE fit it???

If I find this fun stuff out, then I'mma turn this into a Winter Break project in my garage :-D

The oil cooler on a 5S-FE has coolant circulating through it.

Its just a ring that bolts onto the block.
