4afe P2 rally corolla

Hi everybody

I have a awd 1989 corolla sedan.

I use this car for rallying in a production class therefore i cannot modify anything on the engine (4afe)

I would like any suggestions on how to squeeze every last drop of power from a stock 89 4afe. Ignition timing advance?

Thanks

Yannick Harvey

Most popular engine mods for rallying in production class in Canada: Air filter, you can change the filter but not any other part of the intake. So most people use a K&N Drop-in filter. That's good for a horse or two. Exhaust, you're allowed to replace the entire exhaust system, except for the manifold. Must also have a working, (but not nessesarily OEM) cat converter. ECU, is allowed to be completely modified or replaced in production class. You can change the spark timing and use high octane gas. Those are all the best ones I can think of now. Some other people might know some more specific stuff for that engine.

Thanks wedge

I have already dropped in a K&N filter and replaced the exhaut line . I guess i'll have to play with the timing now.

After the exhaust, you are probably going to get the most bang out of (on the cheap and effective side...there are more exotic computers) an SDS standalone for playing with fuel volume, timing and spark timing. Not remembering any pictures on that particular engine, many toyotas have multiple dowel pin settings on the stock cam gears that are really designed to get the timing perfect when the heads are milled during gasket changes, but they can be used in a pinch for a degree or so of cam timing changes.

I'd say focus more on the suspension than power. In rally power isnt the big essential, the way the car handles is.
