Oil catch cans...be nice!

OK, I am bringing this topic up one more time. But please read my question carefully.

I have a turbo on a '96 5S-FE. There is a breather hose that goes from the valve cover to the intake pipe before the turbo. This line used to run from the valve cover to the throttle body but was changed with the turbo install. There is also the stock PCV setup between the valve cover and the intake after the throttle body.

I am about to install an intercooler. To avoid it filling with oil from expected blowby, I am installing an oil catch can on the breather hose. This will protect the intercooler from getting oil in it.

Knowing there is probably a fair amount of oil in the PCV line as well, I was thinking about installing a can to get that oil too. This would protect the engine from carbon buildup.

My question: Is there a single can that could be used to get the oil in the breather hose AND the oil in the PCV hose? I know I could install two cans, but I just wanted to ask the obvious question first.

Please no flames.....

Most with catch cans report only a slowdown of oil coating the intake tract. The catch cans out there do not cool or baffle the crankcase vapours enough to do any real work, though they do cut it down some what, and look all bling bling with some polish, but they all look better than they act. If you're getting enough depositing on the pipes to fill your intercooler, you have a far greater problem. Save the money for the rings!

Although I appreciate the response, it is not answering the posted question. I do not want to talk about whether a catch can is a good idea, if it gives you an extra 200 hp for free or how it looks. I just want to know about possible routing schemes or products out there to get the oil in both the breather and the PCV lines.

For the purposes of the conversation, lets all assume these things work. I do have proof that blowby is a natural occurance on an internal combusiton engine with piston rings (generally speaking) and on turbo setups, it is more common.

Thanks,
Steve

Hey Steve, if you check out the PCV system, the entire crankcase is connected. So whether it is the breather or PCV, the pressure is still coming out from the crankcase and up to the valvecover breather.

PCV problems is very common on big bore Hondas, and a lot of guys (including myself) run a single catch can for both the valvecover breather and the PCV... I also run this setup on my turbo Camry as well. However, this particular setup requires you to vent off the crankcase pressure because it can no longer be plumbed back into the intake manifold or at the TB. I guess the system will not be closed anymore (not emissions legal), but you have a turbo, so who gives a crap about emissions What you will get is a spanking clean intercooler and charge pipes.

You can also run a catch can with an oil drain... so when the breather and the PCV leaves the oil into the catchcan, it will automatically be drained back into the engine block. I am sure you can find a plug on the engine block that can be removed and have a fitting to replace it. So on the catchcan, there will be two inlets (for breather and PCV), a breather filter at the top, and at the bottom there will be a drain and a hose that drains the oil back into the block.

Well, I guess you have been looking at cheapo Ractive catchcans or some other knock off catchcans...

I have a catchcan setup on my Integra, and it gets full at every oil change... My Camry's catchcan setup also eliminated all the oil residue at the intercooler and charge pipes... It used to have tonned of buildups in there.

Does it work? Well, it worked for my cars for all these years
