vvtl-i problems

my mass air flow was bad so i replaced it (the dealer wanted 331 dollars to replace it, right! i did it for a hundred) my celica was like the day i bought it. now three weeks later i lost my vvtl boost. at 6000 i feel a sort of engagement but nothing happens it just sound like the engines straining, no growl, no power. could it be the oil sensor that engages the cam? i don't think its the ecu because it seems to do somthing at 6000 rpm.anyone had this problem? thanks in advance

I think there is a Toyota Service Bulletin for the 2ZZ-GE engine; looks like there is a manufacture problem with the bolts that engage the VVTL-i system, they get worn down so much the system fails to engage the "higher profile cam" thus you are not getting the kick in the pants you used to get when the car was new.

I cant remember where I saw this info, it was probably at the Team Celica forum site (www.tcforum.com)

Its the infamous lift bolt problem. Basically its a bolt that wears out and doesn't allow the motor to hit lift. The shitty running condition is because the ecu thinks the car is in lift and throws in extra fuel and timing.

try searching www.alldata.com .

Here are the lists of TSB for the 00-04 Celicas.
Moderator, make this a sticky note, I think people are gonna need this.

http://www.newcelica.org/forums/show...&threadid=4338

TSB (#EG010-03) for certain early models

Might as well read the whole thread at

thanks for the bad news, i guess it time to rip it apart and take a peek, hopefully it just worn and not busted off. how can a car manufacturer make an engine that a bolt breaks in and not stand behind it.
