Actually, I believe the 2nd gen 20v (aka "black top") has VVT-i. It's the silver tops that are just VVT.

And the 7AFE has weak internals, so I'd be careful about running it too hard. WAY too many people have put 4A-GE heads on 7A-FE blocks and ended up throwing a rod. This especially happens to AW11 and AE86 owners looking for greater displacement.

yup blacktops the only one with VVT-i. only other corollas with it are the newer gen 00+ 1ZZFE/2ZZ which would be a waste to swap. And yeah the 7AFE has weak internals. Run it around 4-8 PSI and you shouild be fine. Ive heard of 7AFE's with stock internals handling 10-15 but not for too long. With forged internals and turbo they can acutally put out some decent numbers.

1995 actually. Silver tops were available as early as '91. It was used in the last Trueno/Levin (AE111), and a cool mid-engined tuner car by Tom's called the Angel 01.

After that, I think Toyota stopped 4A-GE development, so there probably won't be any more. The ZZ blocks are apparently the future in small displacement performance from Toyota.

for you guys that are still confused about the different types of toyota variable valve timing systems, check this out... VVT, VVT-i and VVTL-i

thanks for the infos Kensuke!

thanks for the infos Kensuke!
It's a mid-engined tuner car by TOM'S. TOM'S is a tuner company that uses Toyotas as their base. They've also done work for the Supra and Altezza.

It's all fiberglass construction and looks like a cross between an AW11, Lotus Elise, and the Tommy Kaira II/III. Has gull wing doors. It uses a lot of Toyota parts and the 20v 4A-GE as it's powerplant. It's very rare, and I don't think it's in production anymore. You can actually win it in Gran Turismo 2. Dunno about 3.

Some people have dropped 20v 4A-GEs in AW11s. I know of at least one person in Australia who managed to make a 20v 7A-GZE, but I think he had to use forged internals.

BTW, the problem with the 7A-FE --> 7A-GE isn't really about forced induction, but rather the fact that the "G" head can rev the engine beyond 8000 rpm, but the internals on the 7A were really designed for the "F" head. If you rev it too hard, it's like a gernade waiting to go off. MANY peope have blow up their 7As without even adding a blower. Mild forced induction might not be such a problem, as long as you don't lead-foot it.
