Its so that the intake camshaft can drive the exhaust camshaft since theres only one cam gear (on the intake cam).

exhaust cam sub gear

I know the gears on the intake and exhaust mesh and the intake drives the exhaust. The question is why is the exhaust cams' gear split in two side by side and one of the halves called a sub gear??

I don't know why its split in two.

The thicker half of the gear is called the main gear and the thinner half a subgear.

it is something to do with the intake and exhaust gears always staying in contact, never not touching each other. what i forget though is the reason for this (readit in toyota manual which no longer have).
