Question about removing air conditioning compressor

I have a 2.2 camry LE with a busted air conditioning compressor. I want to remove it and have the belt go around the cam, crank, and alternator with a short belt. I was told by someone that I will put to much strain on the cam if I do this. However, at the parts store they have a part number for a belt for camry models without the air conditioning system. I assume that if some camrys come off the factory floor without air conditioning, then it is safe to run a short belt set up.

What do you think?
