any idea how many degrees advanced timing is usually good for an average 1600cc motor? or does it have to be dynoed to find the optimum timing???
yea yea i know this isnt a hardcore question, but where else am i gonna post this

not sure on the zc but on the 4age the mainstay of users keep it stock - cuz that is where the most power and fuel economy lie.
hrm ok i wont toy with it then. my ass is just itchy and i wanna do something keke
With most of our cars I think timing is automatically adjusted. However I think base timing can still be advanced/decreased. Lemon Tree has the directions on his website's FAQ.

Advance it a few degrees and see what happens. If it pings turn it back a little.
The optimum setting is right before it starts pinging.
Make sure that you have a timing light before you f**k with it.
Good luck.

Theres no replacement for positive manifold pressure

Hello Everyone
What year and model motor?
4afe's w/ 91 + octane go w/ 2 degrees advance.(had this motor for the 1st 250,000 miles of my car)
Low-comp (blue top) 4ag's same as above!!
W/ intake,headers,2 1/4 exhaust still no pinging (what I have now)
All other 4ag's I would leave stock as they all use 91 + octane from the factory due to the higher comp.
Which makes advancing a little sketchy.
Maybe if you can get some 96 octane I would try to advance on a High-comp (red top) but that's about it.
As for silver and black tops just leave them stock or you migt have to retard them some due to the lower octane ratings here in the states.
Just my 2 cents!!
C-YA!!

umm my engine is a D16A8ZC (honda dohc 1600cc) with 9.5 compression. i feed it 92 octane gas..
I'm using a 4A-F 91model with 98octane fuel, using about 15deg advanced timing.... used to be +20deg, but since I sometimes use 95octane, I figured I'll lower the timing a bit
Hello Everyone
Don't know what to tell you there Shuan.
I kinda figured you had a toyota engine but none the less.
9:5 comp uses 87 octane gas.
Go ahead and put 93 in and advance about 2 1/2 degrees and call it done you should pick up 3-5 hp but will lose a little gas mileage.
(if you realy care about mileage)
You migth want to change to a colder plug also.
Hey Flashmn:
So that means you are at 25 degrees BTDC!!
You might want to back that down alittle.
You will lose power if advance to much!!
Well, gotta go C-YA!!

No its 15, I did it myself with a timing light... used to be way more than that.. of course the vacume advance does wonders aswell, but when you speak of timing its usually without the vacume advance.
Hello
Hey that's cool then Flashmn.
I was talking from 10 BTDC.
Where are you located?
I can't get 98 octane around town, only from the race track.
Well, gotta go C-YA!!

Hi, I have a low comp 4A-GE in my MR2. When I did a rebuild I got the machine shop to shave 10 thou off the cylinder head to bump the compression. Once I had the motor back together and running I found that I had a much better idle at 12 deg BTDC than at the standard 10 deg BTDC. What's up with that?
