RAV4 Upper Timing Belt Cover

Disaster while changing the water pump on my 2000 4cyl RAV4:

After supporting the engine and removing the passenger side motor mount, I removed the two bolts that attach the motor mount stem to the engine (to remove it and get it out of the way so the cover could come off) but couldn't get it off or even get it to budge. While wrangling the upper timing belt cover around the aparently unremovable motor mount stem, I broke a chunk out of the cover (near the stationary idler). Grrrr...

Before replacing the broken cover...is there a secret trick on maneuvering the cover around the motor mount stem, or does the motor mount stem need to be removed somehow?

Thanks!
