I'm about to do a swap on my ride. Is it better to keep the 5sfe transmission or just use the 3sgte transmission? Which transmission has a shorter gear ratio for a quick take off? does anybody know the gear ratios for the both of them and if a 5sfe transmission will bolt right on to the 2nd or 3rd gen 3sgte engine. Thanks.
I'm guessing that it would come out of the V6 Camry/Solara? Do all the 92+ V6 Camry and the Solara trannies just bolt on then? Is the transmission stronger or the gear ratios are shorter than the stock 5sfe or 3sgte? Thanks.
Originally posted by Rapeacivic From what I've read using the search button, it's better to use the E-153 tranny from a Solara when doing the 3SGTE swap on a 3rd gen Camry.
both the solara V6, camry V6, and the MR2 turbo have the same tranny code E153. The difference is the final drive (camry/solara V6 3.98 vs MR2 turbo 4.29)and the gear ratios are a 10th off each other.

Um personnally if you plan on using your car for more of daily driving and hwy cruising ... I suggest going with the solara/camry tranny. Plus you would have to modify the hell out of the MR2 trans to convert it from rwd to fwd... I mean by rwd is the shift linkage are facing the front of the vehicle while the solara/camry v6 trans are facing the rear of the vehicle...

Does the MR2 tranny otherwise bolt up? (I'm worried about a gen2, not gen3 Camry) Rather than changing the tranny, could the control cables be lengthened to go around the front of the motor? My gut tells me its not that simple, but I wanted to at least get an experienced opinion on it...
Thanks,
Charlie

theres a link on how to convert the MR2 tranny into fwd shift linkage... I think that way is the best ... Its on the camry forum on ToyotaNation... I did it the hard way were I actually swapped out the whole tranny housing from 3 different cars...

Ouch, yeah. I have that link on changing the linkages. Then I just have to find a cheap way to get the parts off a FWD/AWD tranny. Its too bad the ones off my current tranny won't work.
I just can't help but think that for a couple thousand dollars for an MR2 rear clip I could have all the (current) issues of my Camry solved and have a nice motor and tranny to go with it. Then again, there would be wiring issues, since its not a plug-and-play deal...

yep this was the problem i was facing. Try and ghetto rig something, or not.... Thats when i decided on the 3SGE. cheaper, 170hp, and its FWD and available with automatic if interested. Im getting mine for $735 w/shipping. That gets me the motor, trans, harness, ecu, ignitor, and MAF. cant beat that.

Well I'll be tackling this same issue in a week or so as I convert my MR2 trans to FWD. Watch for pics in the Tercel forum under replacement project car.
