I wasnt quite sure on wether to put this question here, or in the general tech section.
I'm building a kit car, and i want to consider using a V-6 turbo from a 97 camry as a powerplant. My question is- do any of you know if its even possible to bolt this up to a GM rear wheel drive transmission, or ANY rwd trannies, or a mid-engined transaxle (corvair)????
THis info would help me figure out how much its gonna cost me to make this happen- engine to tranny- cheap....engine to custom made adapter to tranny- big bucks! LOL
Thanks guys!!!
Dana
I believe that would be a 3VZ-FE 3.0 liter engine? I don't believe it was offered with a turbo, so that must be an aftermarket addition you are considering? That engine is prone to blowing head gaskets. It also came in Tacomas and 4Runners as a 3VZ-E, so you can get rwd trannies for it. I would go with a 5VZ(3.4 liter, rwd tranny available) from the late 90's Tacomas and Runners, or a 1MZ (3.0 liter?) out of the later Camrys and Avalons. The 1MZ has been successfully transplanted into an MR2 so you should be able to use a mid engine set up with the MR2 tranny. You could also use the Buick V6 turbo found in Grand Nationals. It's GM so finding trannies is pretty easy.

THanks for the info! i'm not really very knowledgable about these engines, i started looking around for powerful/high-tech looking engines, and came accross a photo of one titled "97 V-6 Camry torbo" it looks sweet, and thats all i know really. I'm more of an old carburated V-8 gearhead, but i want to get into the new inport stuff too.
i do have one more question- ANY idea of a total length of one of these engine/rwd tranny combo's???? space is at a premium in my kit, and every millimeter counts!
i think what you really want is a supra turbo motor... older 7mgte, or newer 2jzgte. no camry was offered with a turbo, nor are there turbo kits available at this point for a v6... you MIGHT mean supercharged though. anyways, you should use the 2jz-gte, twin turbo supra motor, with the supra tranny, which is made for rwd... then you can alter the driveshaft/s to work with your project car... the 1mz or 3mz or 5vz-fe are all good v6 engines that can be mounted to any rwd v6 toyota truck tranny...
I couldn't remember what year they went from the 3vz to the 1mz, I guess 94 and up is the 1MZ. I also didn't know the 1mz would bolt up to the same tranny as the 3 and 5vz's did. I'll have to file that away for future use. Also, I think I read that the V6 camry and the MR2 both use the same E153 tranny.
So you could just take the 1mz and tranny together to put in the car for a mid engine set up using MR2 axles or something? Worth looking into.

you cant use a tranny that is made for a camry... since its a front wheel drive design. you need a tranny designed for rear wheel use via driveshaft... like any v6 toyota truck tranny...
the 1mz is a very performance oriented head. they didnt classify it as a G head, but it is a lot LIKE a G head. ever see the articles in the Turbo magazine where they turbo and supercrarged a 1mz to put into an mr2... lot of power. and they said when reworking the head that they think it should have been labeled a G head anyways... so the 1mz is a good performance engine.
personally, i would like to know more about this project... what are his goals, what does he want to be the finished product... if we know that, we can help more...
Alright guys, heres the info- i didnt put it up in the first place, cause i didnt think you'd be that interested- to my suprise, i was wrong!
Ok the project vehicle is a Fiberfab Valkyrie, it is a Ford GT-40 replica. It has a custom built tube frame chassis, designed to incorporate a '65-'69 Corvair front/rear suspension. It was also designed to acomodate a Corvair 3 or 4 speed manual transaxle, and smaal block chevy V-8. it has fully independant suspension, and can be upgraded on everything! With a power to weight ratio only found the the most exotic sports supercars (i.e. lamborghini,Ferrari, etc.)
Now, as for my desired end results- i want something comparable to what is mentioned above, but i also want to incorporate more modern technology as well, BUT whatever powerplant is used, it MUST be symetrical- like a sbc v-8, AND it MUST look high tech, and clean.( I really like the TPI setup from the '87 IROC Camaros, see pic below, but too many of the other Valkyrie owners went that route)
As for just using the the normal 1mzfe tranny- no way- too many of the other guys using VW running gear(rear mounted engine) complain about the front end being too light- and floating at high speeds- no good! lol
Desired end result- a show quality car, that is a wonderful blend of original muscle car, and new technologies, form, and beauty.
If sex came on wheels, it would look like these cars- they should be as much of a turn on under the hood, as it is from the outside!
Here is a picture of one of the Valkyries- note that mine is FAR away from this stage! I DO plan to make some major body changes- Late model Trans Am hood scoop on the hood- strech it out some at the rear end, and at the doors, and make the doors scissor style. and the list goes on, and on, and on...
For more info on these cars check out www.Avenger-Vlkyrie.org i am not affiliated with this site- other than being a user/ and admirer)
Thanks guys!

Dude I would go with the 2JZGTE. I think it's one of the best Toyota engines ever made. This engine is capable of producing over 1,000HP. Even if you don't plan on getting that much HP nothing looks more bad ass then a twin turbo setup.

yeah i would most defintiely say 2jzgte, its an inline 6... very symetrical. here is a nice pic i found on supraforums for ya...
almost as powerful as a 1mz supercharged in a stock condition...
its definitely the way to go, and already designed for rwd
