Here's more in depth info about code P0402

DTC P0402: EXCESSIVE EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) FLOW DETECTED

CAUTION: If ECM replacement is instructed in following testing,
and ground circuit are okay. If either are suspect,
malfunction.

Circuit Description

The EGR system recirculates exhaust gas through intake system to
EGR valve opening is regulated by the EGR Vacuum Switching Valve
VSV is controlled by the Vacuum Control Valve (VCV). Amount of EGR
which is mounted on EGR valve.

The EGR valve is closed (VSV on) under the following conditions:

Engine is not warmed up.
Vehicle under deceleration.
Light engine load.
Engine speed more than 4000 RPM.
Engine idling.
Code is set when EGR cut-off, lift amount of EGR valve is .1" (2.6

EGR valve stuck open.
EGR Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV).
EGR VSV open circuit.
EGR valve position sensor open or short circuit.
EGR valve position sensor.
ECM.
Test Drive Confirmation

1.Connect scan tool. See Fig. 1. Start and warm engine to normal
minutes or more. Stop vehicle and allow to idle for about 2
2.Start engine and allow to idle. Operate vehicle at 43-56 MPH
minutes.
3.Check READINESS TESTS. If COMPL is displayed on scan tool and
displayed and MIL is not illuminated, repeat test drive

Diagnosis & Repair (Using Toyota Scan Tool)

1.Check all EGR system vacuum hoses. See appropriate
hoses as necessary. If all hoses are okay, check EGR VSV.
VSV when activated by scan tool. VSV is located under "V" bank
Go to next step.
2.With EGR system off, air from port "E" should flow from port
flow from port "F". If VSV operates as specified, go to step
3.Remove EGR VSV. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between VSV
(20 C). Measure resistance between each terminal and body of
specified, replace VSV. If resistance is as specified, go to
4.Check VSV operation. Apply battery voltage to VSV terminals.
"F". Remove battery voltage from VSV terminals. Air should
specifications in steps 3) and 4), check for a short in EGR
diagram in L - WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair wiring as
5.Disconnect vacuum hose from EGR valve. Connect a vacuum pump

If engine does not run rough or stall, replace EGR valve. If
engine runs rough or stalls, check EGR valve position sensor.
See appropriate I - SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article. Replace
position sensor as necessary. If position sensor is okay,
replace ECM.

Diagnosis & Repair (Using OBD-II Scan Tool)

1.Check all EGR system vacuum hoses. Replace hoses as necessary.
If vacuum hoses are okay, access ECM behind glove box. Ensure
ignition is off. On models with Calif. emissions and except
Calif. emissions with engine immobilizer system and/or
traction control, disconnect ECM E11 connector. See Fig. 2.
Connect a jumper wire between ground and terminal No. 18
(Yellow/Green wire) at ECM E11 connector. Go to next step. On
except Calif. emission models without engine immobilizer
system and/or traction control, disconnect ECM E8 connector.
See Fig. 3. Connect a jumper wire between ground and terminal
No. 12 (Yellow/Green wire) at ECM E8 connector. Go to next
step.

NOTE: For information on engine immobilizer system, see
COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in E -
THEORY/OPERATION article.

2.On all models, apply air pressure to EGR Vacuum Switching
Valve (VSV) port "E". VSV is located under "V" bank cover on
top of engine. With jumper wire connected, air should flow
from port "F". See Fig. 6. With jumper wire disconnected, air
should flow from port "G". If VSV operates as specified, go to
step 5). If VSV does not operate as specified, go to next
step.
3.Remove EGR VSV. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between VSV
terminals. Resistance should be 27-33 ohms at 68 F (20 C).
Measure resistance between each terminal and body of VSV.
Resistance should be infinite. If resistance is not as
specified, replace VSV. If resistance is as specified, go to
next step.
4.Check VSV operation. Apply battery voltage to VSV terminals.
Apply air pressure to VSV port "E". Air should flow from port
"F". See Fig. 6. Remove battery voltage from VSV terminals.
Air should flow from port "G". Replace VSV as necessary. If
VSV meets all specifications in steps 3) and 4), check for
short in EGR VSV circuits between engine compartment fuse box
and ECM. See appropriate wiring diagram in L - WIRING DIAGRAMS
article. Repair wiring as necessary.
5.Disconnect vacuum hose from EGR valve. Connect a vacuum pump
to EGR valve. Start engine. Apply vacuum to EGR valve. If
engine does not run rough or stall, replace EGR valve. If
engine runs rough or stalls, check EGR valve position sensor.
See appropriate I - SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article. Replace as
necessary. If EGR position sensor is okay, replace ECM.

I had a code P0401 once. It turned out to be a spliced vacuum line.

although obdII mandates all codes be standardized, enabling criteria for fault codes and system monitors will vary depending on year make model. with the exception of cc monitors and misfire monitor, a type A misfire is a type A misfire. and an egr code for a 96 car with a valve, vsv, and transducer will have the same code for a 02 car with a linear egr. same fault, different cause.

You need to find Toyota manufacturer codes and post them too. They start with P1XXX instead of P0XXX.

Post P0401 Trouble and potential solutions from a Ford - will try them on the Camry 2000

P0401 Trouble and potential solutions from a Ford - will try them on the Camry 2000

After taking my camry to a special garage ;-) twice, both times, the EGR was to blame. First it was that the EGR was gummed up. Good excuse, 75.$ fee.
2nd time - 1 year later, EGR P0401 code came up, that'll be 125.$ up front for reading the code and 500.$ to replace the EGR valve at the garage. Just the valve eh. Ya, like my wallet is lined with gold. What next, the sensor or a vacuum hose or the vacuum regulator. That could amount to 1500.$ in repairs.

Forget it. Took the EGR valve out, used 4.$ Carburator cleaner and cleaned it out. Took me one hour and a few scraped nuckles. All the grease and grime that came out of the EGR valve onto a white paper towel was amazing. Engine trouble light still on though. Now I'm still upset. Went to Canadian Tire. Purchased this OBD II reader, "The Inova 3100 code reader"

http://www.canadiantire.ca/assortmen...rtment=primary
(Alt - just type in OBD II in their search field and it'll bring it up for 249.$ Canadian)

I then erased the P0401 code / cleared it and the engine light hasn't come back on since.

Now, this whole thing is really beginning to bug me. The code in the PCM will clear after 3 successfull engine cycles but it wasn't clearing itself. Could be a falty circuit i.e. an open wire due to corrosion. I'm noticing allot of the shrink wrap on the wiring recede due to age - I guess.

This is definately one of those ghost problems that can cost a fortune for nothing. Camry's are good vehicles, at least it's not the tranny.

Wierd thing though is that all of these EGR problems occured when I took the car into have it's oil changed and the next day - poof EGR issues galore and stalling at low idles at around 500 to 600 RPM's (but only at stop lights/intersections) - had to slip it into neutral and rev her to 1000 rpm to get her not to stall on me. Took it back and complained. This could also be related to the fact that I used STP fuel line cleaner to clean out my fuel system. Maybe the additive didn't burn right. I find though that Octane 97 fuel does burn better and I engine light doesn't come on as much - more so in humid days. Even tactrol fuel cleaner + high octane 97 used by a major gas company didn't resolve the engine light.

Anyhow, No more EGR issues until I took it back to the same oil joint. Guess what happened next. Now I got issues again with the EGR. I've never had to pay a dime for repairs other than about 200.$ in diagnostics OBD II code reads (which is why I finally got off my but and purchased a OBD II code reader to stop getting ripped off) Sigh, it would be nice if Toyota just put in a little LCD window or even used the tachometer/tripometer to relay the OBD II codes by pressing the TRIP A / TRIP B button a third time or by holding and pressing something else. At least I wouldn't have to spend the cash on a reader.

PS

It is definately worth reading this ford website on the EGR issue. It has a similar if not identical circuit to the camry 2000 CE 4 cyl model.

I'm going to try some of their solutions and tips.

These links have awesome diagrams and some interesting foot notes.

Apparently humidty in cold climates can rupture the vacuum hose/split it (like water expanding/frozen in a copper pipe) and then when the temp of the car warms up, the hoses expand and the seals the crack. Perhaps a little elf slit the pipe with a razor??? Hmmmm.

Definately worth checking the hoses for wear and tear. Additionally, worth inspecting the wires to the sensor for opens due to corrosion from humidity and road salt (for the northern folks)

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/egrmonitor.htm
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/egrsensors.htm

Oh ya, I change my own oil now.

The camry 2000 CE 4 Cyl is an amazing engine. Love the car above all else. She purs better than ever, even with all the EGR - bull s. I'm starting to use high octane 97 fuel once a month and I'm going to clean the filter on the vacuum regulator with a 9.$ computer compressed air canister.

Another thing, I'm going to check is the EGR diaphram, a feather around the diaphram should indicate to me if there is a broken seal.
