Check THIS out

The latest addition to my ever growing arsenal of go-fast goodies:

Australian made, Philtronics Rallytrip Pro rally computer. I just finished installing and calibrating it today. Very cool stuff, I love it already. This weekend is the Subaru Ontario Winter Rally. So I'll soon be able to see just how well it works!

It displays interval, and total distance with 1 metre accuracy. It displays current speed, and average speed to the codriver. The blue doohickey on the left is a remote zeroing unit. It's just a button that the codriver can hold in his hand which resets the interval distance. The only thing it doesnt do, which I would like, is that it doesn't record time, or have any kind of built-in stopwatch. But I guess an actual stopwatch can be used for that purpose.
Basically, it helps me go faster in rally's, but not really anywhere else.

Edit: Oh yeah, I discovered something pretty weird while I was testing it out. According to this thing, I am actually travelling about 10kph faster than is shown on my stock speedo. I'm not yet sure which one is correct, but if it's right, that might explain why I keep getting speeding tickets all the time!

Very cool! That is so much handier than figuring it out longhand based on odometer.

So for the stuff you're doing does that bump you into a Prepared or Professional class?

No, it doesn't affect class at all. If it were an SCCA event it would put me into a prepared class for sure. But in the current CARS rules for road rally, there is no classing for car preparation. There are only Novice, Intermediate, and Expert classes. Based on the driver's, and co-driver's skill level.

Sweet. In some ways that makes a lot more sense because it focuses on the driver/codriver pair rather than the equipment.

On the other hand, you can really get burned if you're up against an experienced duo with lots of goodies in their car

Well, you'd be surprised at good you can do with just a stock odo, calculator, and a pad of paper. A good navigator can do just fine with just the stock odo.
This just makes things a whole lot easier. More precise distances takes the guesswork out of where the next turn is supposed to be. And the ability to recalibrate the odo to match the odo used to create the routebook means there's 1 less calculation that needs to be made for each interval.
But it doesn't really help the timing in any way. That's why my navi is bringing alot his laptop to do all the timing calculations.
