LSD's

What are the different types of LSD's and how do they work? I'm not talking about 1 way, 1.5 way, 2 way I mean the actual mechanism. Pics would be great too if anyone has them.

I have no idea what you mean by 1 way, 1.5 or 2 way, but if you are referring to limited slip differentials, look at the link below.

I havn't chked the HowStuffWorks link yet, but I know that it's a great site in general.

As for how LSDs work, you gotta remember that there are three basic types you gotta chk out.... Viscious, Clutch, and Helical...

Helical LSDs are just a type of geared LSD... I don't remember right now, but I believe that helical lsds are 1 way only due tothe way the worm gear and helically cut gears are set. I know that they're pretty common stock parts on Honda, Nissans, and Mazdas

^Isn't that TorSen?^
Where the gears are cut and installed in such a way that the torque is sent to the wheel with more traction?
Would someone care to explain the 1 way, 1.5 way and 2 way thing? I haven't heard of that.

You know, thinking about it, helical does sound a lot like Torsen....hmm.. i'll have to look at them more closely.... but re: the 1 way, 1.5 way, and 2 way, chk out the site...it's not the best explanation, but I can't remember where I learned about them.

Hmm, clutch type lsd with cam driven pressure instead of spring, looks like. Thanks for the info.

1 way is there is only effect during acceleration, 1.5 way is full effect druing acceleration and half effect during deceleration, and 2 way is full effect during braking and acceleration from my understanding.

its possible to put an lsd into anything... The only problem is what type or which company actually makes one... Another thing you would have to deal with is , which tranny is close to yours that can fit with little or no mods...

But If I remember correctly the Celicas had a 5s-fe in it in 1997 and TRD did offer a LSD for that year and version of that trans... The tranny code has left my memory, so I apologize if I cannot recall the tranny code for you ....

another question would be why ??? Are you make power to the point of needing it or are you into road racing ??? or Parking lot driving (auto-x) ???

These are the only reason for you to be interested in installing one... If not then its a waste of cash... I road racing and go on touge runs in my Echo and I dont plan on installing a LSD ...

Even thought TRD Japan, Cusco, and Quaife offers one for the Echo/Platz/Vitz 1.5RS ...

Wraith!!! You double posted!!! j/k

Do they make Detroit Lockers for Imports? I believe that is the right term. You know, semi style, where you can lock it as needed. I was thinking of getting one for my up coming project. But I would only need it when I'm on the strip. I wouldn't want it for general driving (it will also be my summer car). I kinda like being able to turn.
