Oil pump O-ring

oil pump O-ring on 20R

Hi! I'm new here and although I searched the archives i didn't find an answer to my question.

My 1980 4X4 (20R NOT a 22R) is leaking oil, it is seeping out from the oil pump where the cover mates with the timing chain cover, It seeps out along both sides and at the bottom, but not at the top (as far as I can tell)

neither my Haynes or my chiltons tell me how to replace the oil pump O-ring, but they do tell me how to replcae the entire pump.

My question is, Do I really have to pull the oil pan to get to the O-ring? it looks like I can just pull the cover off and replace it.

I don't want to start something that looks like a 1 hour job to find out I have to pull the pan. that will take considerabley longer.

or is there something else that could cause the oil to seep from there?

thanks for your help.

-dale

no...no... no... I've done two of these in as many weeks. You have to remove the cooling fan and pulley and all the belts. Once you do that you have to remove the crank pulley bolt which is a normal bolt. It's usually on very tight so you may think it's reverse thread, but it isn't.

Once the pulley is off you just remove 5 0r 6 bolts from the oil pump, and it comes off. Be careful not to let the two ring gears fall out of the pump when you remove it (but they are easy to put back in...just don't put them in backwards!).

Wipe down the area on the timing cover and the pump, and remove the crank oil seal and replace it. Toyota had one that was flush with the outer edge of the oil pump, but now only sells an offset seal that rides on a different spot on the crank pulley. Carefully tap that one in place until it seats inside the front of the pump housing. Then place the new o-ring into the groove on the front cover (I coat it with a little oil to help it to stay in place).

Now carefully replace the pump making sure the o-ring didn't fall out of the groove and get sandwiched between the pump and the timing cover. Reverse the above steps above and you are done!

Thanks!

I thought pulling the pan was odd, but I wasn't sure if the oil strainer was attached somehow to the back of the pump, or maybe useing the same bolts to hold it on.

Glad to hear it's simple.

thanks

The lower end of the 22R is the same as the 20R right? So the oil pump is just as easy to get to? Just checking, my 22R is leaking around the oil pump just like the guy here. It was fine at the beginning of the winter and now, after sitting ( I drove it around the block every 2-3 weeks) it's dripping oil pretty well (only after running though). Oil pressure is still perfect though. If It'll only take a few hours to replace I can do it. But if it'll take longer I'll need to do it this summer . (I'm in school at the moment). Think it'll be easy? I guess thats my only question. Sorry for rambling.

Gen1

I have just put a new oil pump with seal and o-ring as well, and now I have it leaking out of the seal real slightly, any idea why it is doing this? I have a 20r by the way.

Thanks
Joe
