Question 89 tercel valve adjustment

I tried to adjust the valves on my 89 tercel 3e engine but could not get even get my feeler guage (standard blade type) to slip between the valve and rocker. I was going by a chiltons manual--wich shows a different engine 8 valve--mine is 12. My engine has rocker springs the one in the manual does'nt. I've done this on a 22r motor before with no problems...what is the trick to adjusting the valves on this engine? I tried to slide the guage under both side of the rocker, but it get in there--and yes the engine is at tdc 1 and rockers are loose. Would love some help!

if it aint skipping at idle, ya better leave em alone, this motor has enough trouble climbing hills without you making the valve lift any less, what are you wanting to set them at?

Bump

I'm having the same freakin problem!

Here is why you cant slip a feeler gauge in there. The rocker arm has a horse shoe shaped tip that sits around the valve. WTF!

I dont know how you are supposed to adjust them. I was hoping to find a wire feeler gauge that fits between the rocker arm and the valve.

I think I'm going to take my dremel to my feeler gauge and cut it so that it will fit in the horse shoe shape.

Anyone else know anything about this problem?
