Red top beams engine if legal in cali. If not 3sgte from MR2. Read MR2 forums about the 2.2L frankenstein.

The beams engine will not be legal in California, nor will a 5sfe/3sgte franke.. Your best bet would be to get a 2nd Gen 3S-GTE. You'll need to get a USDM 3SGTE head along with the manifold and all egr parts to pass smog. JDM engines will not have it but can be converted by having the head drill for the correct egr ports. Problem with JDM is that the manifold can not be converted and you'll still need to source the EGR parts along with a USDM manifold. Cali smog laws are tuff but its for a good reason and with proper tuning it doesn't really matter. Anyone can build a fast car but building a fast car that is street legal is the real the challange. It can be done as I've done it on a 89 Supra Turbo that was street/smog legal pusing more then 320hp. Lots of people do it all the time real issue is that anything legal cost more money.
