Need help troubleshooting this big engine movement when shifting from P to D

Hi All,

I have a 93 Corolla with 4 speed auto tranny and the engine is 7A-FE. Whenver I shift the tranny from P to D, I encounter a big shock movement for the whole car. When I pop the hood, I can see that when I shift from P to D, the engine will move from rear to front or vice versa(engine clunks).

I took it to a mechanic and he think the front and rear engine mount is bad so I have him replaced them.

Ok, now those 2 engine mount replaced with NEW one. But the problem still there(engine still clunks).. what else could cause this problem??

He mentioned my axle has freeplay but that should not cause that big shock engine movement when I shift from P to D right?

How many miles are on the car?

Older trannys tend to get pretty clunky...

about 160K miles on the car.

Engine idle below 1K..maybe 800 or so..

The car drive normal and I did not experience any rocking back and forth during normal driving.. at least it seems normal to me and it doesnt have that problem during the auto tranny shift.

The engine clunks only happen when I shift from P to (D or 2 or 1) and from R to (D or 2 or 1). It doesnt do that when I shift from P to R.

It also does not clunks when I shift between D,2,1

Maybe your transmission fluid is low or needs to be flushed.

The pressure in your trans is probably too high. If you don't have trash in your valvebody then I believe there is an adjustment that a quality transmission shop could make.

It's the engine mounts and/or tranny mounts.
The mounts are made out of rubber, and they wear out over time. Oil and grease can erode away at the rubber. And heat from the engine will dry it out, and cause it to crack and split. After many years this leaves your mounts in a very weakened state which allows for exessive engine movement when changing gears like that.
